Tom Betts's Biography

Ephemeral Realsim

My art is rooted in philosophy and nature and it attempts to reflect the pull of the ephemeral to the real. To examine the ripple of a footstep or the impact of ones path. It is the containment of liquid in a teacup, which evaporates, waiting to be refilled, or it is a teacup floating in water, which will eventually sink. It is an act of beautiful futility to capture existence, meaning and substance. What draws me to this path, I have no definite understanding other than I am compelled to create an illusion that is alive or living as frames in a video but it is an indirect language of momentary layers that are compacted and designed to be viewed through. It is a man made matter which matters to me as one desires another, mating to a pattern of rippling points in time. Seeing through these intimate outcomes makes the viewer a voyeur of my thinly veiled brush strokes. Viewing each painting is not unlike viewing the earth, seeing through the transparent atmosphere to the perception of life contained within an honest loneliness of space and atmosphere, which is the environment of all life with an awareness of perspective. It is the reflection of life in an atmosphere looking for its mate which is life itself, a constant pull or draw towards something of which we can not know but at its root is being drawn together like the earth towards the sun, the north towards the south, the float before the fall. It is life through water, land through air. It is Ephemeral Realism.
