Royo

Royo's Biography

Spanish Impressionist

Royo was born in Valencia, Spain in 1945. He showed such talent at an early age that his father employed private tutors to instruct him in the techniques of drawing, painting and sculpture. At age 14, Royo entered the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia and at 18 he was accepted for private study under the Chairman of Art Studies at the San Carlos Academy. In 1968, he began to exhibit in the prestigious Spanish galleries in Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona. The reception was so positive that he received commissions to paint the royal portraits of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. Beginning in the 1989 and continuing until today we see the development of his "matured" style. His dramatic usage of color and "texturing" capture his subject matter with unique flair. The sweeping brushstrokes, bold swaths of color, and heavy impasto captures the eye and draws one inward. In the end it is the understanding of the untamable nature of femininity which has been captured by Royo. It is the contrast of the light and shadow as they define shape. It is the whiteness of the sunlight as it defines color. It is the knowledge that mankind has sprung from nature, which works incessantly to take it back.
